Making the holidays easier for caregivers

Families in Missouri and Illinois generally make it a point to be together during the holiday season. For caregivers looking after loved ones with health conditions such as mesothelioma, however, it may not be possible to plan or attend a gathering. This is because of the stress of providing care. Furthermore, trying to host a holiday gathering may be more than a patient and caregiver can handle. In some cases, the person with the health problem won't feel up to attending a traditional holiday event.

Know the signs of mesothelioma

Many people in Missouri and Southern Illinois are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year. While there are some screening tests for people with known exposure to asbestos, such as X-rays or CT scans, most cases of the disease are discovered when a patient visits his or her doctor with symptoms of the disease.

The effectiveness of mesothelioma surgery

Missouri residents who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma may be pleased to know that researchers are looking at new methods of determining the efficacy of mesothelioma surgery. Most of the people who receive a diagnosis of mesothelioma are often given treatment that consists of multiple therapies, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. Individuals who qualify for new therapies, such as photodynamic therapy or immunotherapy, will still have a very high chance of undergoing surgery. This is because surgery has been proven to be the only treatment that has nearly always improved survival chances.

Doctors use multiple tests to help diagnose mesothelioma

If you recently passed your 50th birthday or are quite a way beyond it already, you've likely noticed that your body doesn't function exactly the same as it did when you were 20. Once people hit mid-life, they often start to notice little aches and pains or impediments in physical mobility and cognitive processes as well. If you spent a large portion of your life working in an Illinois factory or some other environment where asbestos was present, your later years may also be marked by some adverse health symptoms.

Age at diagnosis plays a huge role in treatment for mesothelioma

A study published in the medical industry journal Lung Cancer reveals a huge demographic disparity impacting treatment for malignant mesothelioma. An analysis of the 2011 National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) data shows that age provided the greatest disparity in treatment levels.

Mesothelioma in the workplace

Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure and there is currently no known cure. Originally used because its heat and flame retardant properties, asbestos is actually a mineral that is made up of fine particles that are toxic if they become airborne and are breathed in.  Unfortunately, companies were aware of the dangers of asbestos in the workplace, but many have been slow to adopt precautionary measures, thus putting employees at risk.
