Asbestos imports improperly reported, putting citizens at risk

The federal government recently denied a petition calling for increased reporting on asbestos imports. In the petition, environmental groups asked the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to require asbestos importers and manufacturers to publicly report all asbestos-related activities.

According to the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), increased reporting could help protect the public from “potential routes of exposure.” In an effort to protect the thousands of Americans killed by asbestos-related diseases each year, the environmental groups hoped the reports would contain the following information:

  • How much asbestos is being imported
  • Where the asbestos travels after it reaches the United States
  • How manufacturers and other companies are using asbestos

This petition follows the sharp increase in asbestos imports into the United States this past year. Data suggests asbestos imports rose by over 2,000 percent last year. For example, the United States increased the amount of asbestos imports by almost 250 metric tons between June and August of last year. Environmental groups are concerned that the rapid increase in imports prevent the federal government from ensuring companies are adhering to asbestos regulations.

On average, 3,000 Americans receive a mesothelioma diagnosis each year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Sadly, there is an extremely low survival rate for people with mesothelioma, because many people do not show symptoms until decades after they have been exposed to asbestos. Since 1999, the CDC reports there have been at least 45,000 deaths involving patients with mesothelioma.

Asbestos exposure can have serious and sometimes fatal effects. If you or someone you love was exposed to asbestos or is suffering from an asbestos-related disease, consult with an experienced mesothelioma attorney today to discuss your options and fight for the compensation you deserve.
