The effectiveness of mesothelioma surgery

Missouri residents who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma may be pleased to know that researchers are looking at new methods of determining the efficacy of mesothelioma surgery. Most of the people who receive a diagnosis of mesothelioma are often given treatment that consists of multiple therapies, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. Individuals who qualify for new therapies, such as photodynamic therapy or immunotherapy, will still have a very high chance of undergoing surgery. This is because surgery has been proven to be the only treatment that has nearly always improved survival chances.

However, the issue with using surgery lies with the aftermath of the procedure. Surgery can be difficult to recover from, depending on the state of the patient's overall health. Research results indicate that inflammatory markers are released by surgical patients and can affect how well the patient's body will be receptive of other types of treatments.

Mesothelioma doctors have been unsure as to what type of impact the inflammatory markers will have on the other treatment the patient may receive, but University of Pennsylvania researchers have discovered a simple method of testing the effect surgery has on laboratory animals. With this method, the researchers will be able to swiftly ascertain how the inflammatory marker IL-6 affect other treatments. The authors of the study allege that IL-6 can be used to determine how patients may respond to various cancer treatments. They also state that the inflammatory marker is associated with multiple cellular and molecular resistance mechanisms.

An attorney may assist clients who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma and whose condition is due to the exposure to asbestos. The negligent parties could include the owner of the workplace where the exposure occurred.
