Fatal large truck accidents increase, speeding a top cause

Speeding was one of the top causes of fatal large truck accidents in Illinois and elsewhere in 2016 according to a new report by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The agency found that fatal crashes involving large trucks increased by 3 percent in 2016.

The FMCSA reports that there were 4,213 fatal large truck accidents in 2016, which resulted in the deaths of 4,317 people. In comparison, there were 4,074 deadly large truck crashes in 2015, which caused the deaths of 4,094 people. Meanwhile, there were 104,000 non-fatal large truck crashes in 2016, which caused 145,000 injuries. In 2015, there were only 83,000 non-fatal crashes, which caused 116,000 injuries.

The report found that speeding was the top driver-related cause of fatal large truck crashes in 2016. Distracted or inattentive driving was the second most common cause. Approximately 3 percent of fatal crashes involved truck drivers who had consumed alcohol but were not legally impaired. However, 2 percent of truck drivers were legally drunk when they became involved in a deadly crash. Large trucks pulling single trailers were involved in 62 percent of deadly accidents while trucks pulling double trailers accounted for 3 percent of fatal crashes. Of the 722 truck drivers who were killed in crashes, 43 percent were not wearing seat belts.

Serious car and truck accidents can cause catastrophic injuries to drivers and passengers. In order to recover medical expenses, it may be necessary for victims to file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver who caused the crash. If a victim dies, his or her family could file a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault driver. An attorney may help victims or families prepare a claim and work to negotiate a settlement.
